Like all new habits starting is the hardest part, failure seems to happen more often than success and we beat ourselves up for another thing we haven’t stuck to. The truth is you don’t suck but your systems do, and this is why you can’t stick to the gym so today we are going to look at 5 things that will make you the badass in the gym you deserve to be.
1. Location, location, location
Let’s start with the first thing that should be considered when signing up for a new gym, is this gym close enough to my house that I don’t have to feel like I am dragging myself there every day? This tends to be the case for most no-show gym goers and I get you guys if I had to travel 25 + minutes to go workout I would struggle location can make or break even the most experienced lifters. So rule number 1 make sure the gym is less than 25 minutes from your house so you don’t have the commute excuse.
2. Set a goal and stick to the plan
The second way to make the gym a part of your life is to have a goal and a plan and then stick to it as your life depends on it. Most casual gym goers get in there lift a couple of weights just to see what happens then go on the phones for the remainder of the session and sadly this approach leads to no changes other than their banks paying for the membership every month. This is where a plan is your best friend you have no anxiety or guessing work of what is the next exercise to do you develop a level of laser focus and this will help bring you closer to your goals as you are now training with purpose.
3. Make time
We humans are creatures of habit and we don’t like too much variation in our day-to-day so once we have time to do something we like to stick to it. So when designing your schedule take advantage of this and set a specific time in the day dedicated to training and your chances of sticking to it will skyrocket.
Tips for picking a time:
⁃ When have you got energy? Can you see yourself going to the gym after a long day at work
⁃ Chose a time when your gym isn’t super busy
⁃ Let everyone know this is the time for yourself and training
4. Be active every day
One key mistake I see a lot of my clients make is going gym 3 times a week ( which is great ) but having little to no movement on the other 4 days of the week is a big problem. This is where progress is being lost as the days spent doing nothing can stump fat loss and waste the hard hours spent in the gym. So a good benchmark to add is the clique of 10,000 steps a day this will keep your metabolism firing all week long and help you stay in the routine of doing something health-related every day. If this is hard to commit to at first build up to it slowly the main idea is to just keep moving it doesn’t need to be perfect.
5. Look after yourself
Training at the end of the day is physically demanding and you’re only going to feel good doing it if you look after the rest of the day. This means fuelling your body with good quality food and not eating only one meal a day which happens to be McDonald’s no judgment here but it’s time to be real with ourselves this isn’t optimal. Recovery away from the gym in the form of proper nutrition, sleep, and stress management will help you to keep up with exercise as a habit without feeling like you are dragging yourself there every time. An easy place to start with recovery is with these few basic tips:
⁃ 25-40g of protein per meal
⁃ 7-8 hours of sleep per night ( try to wake up and go to sleep at the same time )
⁃ Spend an hour of the day unwinding such as watching a movie, having a bath, etc
Conclusion
Starting an exercise routine is a tough challenge for anyone, especially for those who have picked it up at a later stage but it has the power to be life-changing and once conquered will be a fundamental part of your day and without a doubt, you will change for the better. So never beat yourself up, these things take time and you should be proud that you going in the right direction.
